Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Ron Wilson revealed Wednesday that his club will start the regular season with three alternate captains.
Wilson named Tomas Kaberle and newcomers Mike Komisarek and Francois Beauchimen as alternates for Thursday night’s curtain-raiser against the Montreal Canadiens. Wilson added that he expects one of the three to be named full-time captain by the beginning of November.
The Leafs have not had a full-time captain since Mats Sundin left the club in 2008. Coincidentally, Sundin announced his retirement after 20 years in the league on Wednesday.
The Leafs opening night opponent will also be without a captain as the Canadiens announced it will begin the season without one for the first time in franchise history.
