The Toronto Maple Leafs announced their latest training camp cuts on Saturday, which included defenceman Ben Harpur, who was once thought to be a prime candidate to fill one of the team’s seven slots on the back end.

As Sportsnet’s Luke Fox explained, Harpur received praise from head coach Mike Babcock early in camp for his physical presence — displayed in a fight with Ottawa’s Scott Sabourin.

Harpur, along with Pontus Aberg, Tyler Gaudet and Jordan Schmaltz, has been placed on waivers for the purpose of being reassigned to the AHL’s Toronto Marlies (though other teams now have an opportunity to claim them).

Jeremy Bracco was among a group of eight players who have already been reassigned to the Marlies. Bracco, the Leafs’ second round pick in 2015, recorded 79 points in 75 games with the AHL club last year.

Toronto has 34 players remaining on its training camp roster, a number that will have to be cut to 23 (or fewer) before the season starts Wednesday.
