The Toronto Maple Leafs announced Wednesday that the team has recalled forward Trevor Moore from the AHL’s Toronto Marlies on an emergency basis.
The move comes at the expense of an injured Andreas Johnsson, who suffered a concussion in Sunday night’s loss to the Arizona Coyotes. Johnsson fell awkwardly into the boards late in the second period, skated off on his own, and did not return.
Moore, 23, has been the Maple Leafs go-to call-up recently with the injury to Tyler Ennis. In six NHL games this year, the speedy winger has scored one goal and added two assists. Moore is expected to slot in on the fourth line alongside Par Lindholm and Frederik Gauthier while winger Connor Brown is likely to be bumped up.
On Tuesday, Maple Leafs GM Kyle Dubas said he felt as though there were several prospects that were ready to be called up from the Marlies that could make an immediate impact in the NHL.
“Up front, the job that [coach] Sheldon [Keefe], in combination with Scott Pellerin, have done with group,” said Dubas, “I think there’s four, five or six forwards that we’d be confident in calling up right now and knowing they can fill in, much in the way that Moore did.”
There is still no update on the status of defenceman Jake Gardiner, who sat out Sunday’s game against the Coyotes with back spasms, as well as practice on Monday. The team did not practice on Tuesday.
The Maple Leafs host the defending Stanley Cup champion Washington Capitals — losers of six straight — on Wednesday night.
