It’s not Mitch Marner news, but it’s something.
The Toronto Maple Leafs officially signed goalie Michael Hutchinson to one-year contract Saturday.
The deal, which was initially reported by CapFriendly, is one-way and carries a $700,000 price tag.
Hutchinson, who was slated to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, spent the majority of this past season with the Toronto Marlies in the AHL after being acquired by the Maple Leafs in a trade with the Florida Panthers in December. He posted a 14-7-1 record with a .910 save percentage, 2.70 goals-against average and a pair of shutouts with the Marlies but wasn’t relied upon in the playoffs.
The 29-year-old Barrie, Ont., native made five starts for the Maple Leafs in January, in which he went 2-3-0 with a .914 save percentage as the team dealt with injuries in the crease.
Frederik Andersen is locked into the starter’s role for 2019-20, but the backup job is up for grabs.
Garret Sparks, 25, is under contract for one more year at $750,000, but after a rough 2018-19 campaign, his name has been involved in trade rumours. Toronto lost both Curtis McElhinney and Calvin Pickard on waivers prior to last season after Sparks won the backup job out of training camp.
In addition to Andersen, Sparks and Hutchinson, the Maple Leafs also have netminders Kasimir Kaskisuo, Ian Scott and Joseph Woll under contract in their system.
