Maple Leafs sign goaltender Sparks to 1-year, 2-way deal

Garret Sparks made a statement early in his NHL return with an amazing diving stick save at the corner of the net to stop Filppula on the doorstop.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have re-signed goaltender Garret Sparks to a one-year, two-way contract, the team announced Friday.

Sparks finished with a 6-9-1 record to go with a 3.02 goals-against average and .893 save percentage in 17 appearances with the Maple Leafs as a rookie in 2015-16.

The 23-year-old registered a 14-4-0 record, 2.33 goals-against average, a .928 save percentage, and three shutouts in 21 regular season games with the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League.

Sparks, a native of Elmhurst, Illinois, became the first Maple Leafs goaltender to earn a shutout in his NHL debut when he made 24 saves versus the Edmonton Oilers on November 30, 2015.

The Maple Leafs selected Sparks in the seventh round, 190th overall, at the 2011 NHL Draft.
