Revealed at the 2019 NHL Awards in Las Vegas Wednesday night, Matthews will actually be the first Maple Leafs player to officially grace the cover of the longstanding hockey simulation video game.
Previously, former Leafs forward James van Riemsdyk appeared on special-edition covers of NHL 14 and NHL 15, and William Nylander appeared on the Swedish edition of NHL 19.
In addition to announcing Matthews as their game’s new cover star, EA Sports also revealed a new trailer for the game.
“The cutting-edge Real Player Motion (RPM) Tech continues to evolve the way that gamers showcase their mastery,” a statement from EA Sports about NHL 20 reads. “This year’s gameplay introduces Signature Shots that replicate the most recognizable shot styles of the biggest NHL stars, including P.K. Subban’s booming slapshot wind-up, Auston Matthews’ half toe-drag wrist shot, and Alex Ovechkin’s seamless one-timer.”
NHL 20 will launch worldwide on Playstation 4 and Xbox One on Sept. 13 with pre-order early access for the “Deluxe” and “Ultimate” editions of the game slated for Sept. 10.
