Martin Brodeur on bigger nets: That’s where we’re going

Elliotte Friedman and Damien Cox discuss all the top headlines in the NHL, including concussion spotters, Colorado Avalanche trade rumours, and Martin Brodeur’s thoughts on changing the size of nets.

It’s somewhat surprising to hear so many former goalies come out in favour of the NHL increasing the size of its nets.

Earlier this week, Patrick Roy said he liked the idea and now Martin Brodeur agrees with him.

According to Sportsnet’s Damien Cox, Brodeur said “I don’t think people would even notice” and “I think that’s where we’re going eventually.”

Perhaps Brodeur just wants to ensure no one breaks his records? The future Hall of Famer is the NHL’s all-time winningest goalkeeper and holds many other notable records including most games played, most shutouts and most saves.

NHL senior executive VP and director of hockey operations Colin Campbell told to Prime Time Sports on Sportsnet 590 The Fan Wednesday that the NHL is looking to reduce the size of goalie equipment before they’d look to change the size of nets.

“We are making an attempt this year, usually we make that attempt every year, and the manufacturers tell us they can’t do it in time after our March/June meetings,” he said. “So this year we did it faster and said, ‘OK you got a year and a half to do it.'”
