Max Pacioretty has been named the new captain of the Montreal Canadiens, the team announced Friday.
The 26-year-old winger was voted by his teammates to be the 29th captain in franchise history.
Andrei Markov, Tomas Plekanec, P.K. Subban and Brendan Gallagher were named assistant captains.
The New Canaan, Connecticut, native is the third U.S.-born player to captain the Canadiens, after Brian Gionta (2010-14) and Chris Chelios (co-captain, 1989-90). He became the first American player to reach the 30-goal mark for the Canadiens in 2011-12 (33 goals). He has since passed that mark twice, in 2013-14 (39) and 2014-15 (37).
Pacioretty has registered 144 goals and 280 points in 399 career regular season games since being selected in the first round (22nd overall) by the Canadiens in 2007. He is entering his eighth season with the club.
Pacioretty served as an alternate captain last season, along with Subban, Markov and Plekanec.
