Montreal Canadiens assign defenceman Morgan Ellis to St. John’s

Mark Scheifele victimized the Canadiens defence to score a hat trick and get the Jets a 4-2 win.

The Montreal Canadiens assigned defenceman Morgan Ellis to the St. John’s IceCaps of the AHL on Sunday.

Ellis was called up to the Canadiens on Feb. 26 and he played in three games averaging 8:57 of ice time, though he played just 6:21 in Saturday’s loss in Winnipeg.

The 23-year-old returns to St. John’s where he remains the team’s highest-scoring blue-liner, having scored 12 goals and 31 points in 56 games.

The move opens up a spot on the Canadiens for 28-year-old Victor Bartley, at least until the injured Nathan Beaulieu returns from a lower-body injury.
