Heritage Minute honours first hockey gold medal

The newest Historica Canada ‘Heritage Minute’ honours the Winnipeg Falcons, who won the first-ever Olympic gold medal for hockey in 1920.

The Falcons were a club of Icelandic-Canadians who were separated when several players enlisted to fight in World War I. The team got back together to capture the Allan Cup during the 1919-20 season, and then later traveled to Antwerp, Belgium to represent Canada at the 1920 Games.

Hockey Canada paid tribute to the Falcons in 2004 by having Team Canada wear the gold and black uniforms in an exhibition game prior to the World Junior Championship in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

NHL greats Jacques Plante and Maurice “Rocket” Richard have been the focus of past Heritage Minute segments.
