Visnovsky was acquired by the Islanders from the Anaheim Ducks last June for a second-round pick in the 2013 NHL Draft, but Visnovsky filed a grievance over the deal that would have voided the trade. An arbitrator ruled against the grievance but Visnovsky did not end up playing any games with the Islanders last season.
The 36-year-old played with Bratislava Slovan of the Kontinental Hockey League during the lockout.
Visnovsky is expected to join the team for practice on Friday.
Also on Friday, the Islanders acquired goaltender Tim Thomas from the Boston Bruins.
