The Edmonton Oilers made a trade Monday to help add some much-needed depth at centre, acquiring Derek Roy from the Nashville Predators in exchange for Mark Arcobello.
Roy, 31, has 178 goals and 502 points in 692 career NHL games, but has struggled mightily this season with Nashville. The Predators had placed him on waivers on Dec. 28.
Despite posting just one goal and 10 points in 26 games with the Predators, Roy was once considered a very talented centreman with the Buffalo Sabres where he posted career-highs of 32 goals and 81 points in 78 games back in 2007/08.
Arcboello, 26, has 30 points in 78 career NHL games, including seven goals and 12 points in 36 games this season with Edmonton.
This was the second of a pair of moves Monday as the Oilers also claimed winger Matt Fraser off of waivers from the Boston Bruins.
The 24-year-old Fraser is a six-foot-one, 204-pound winger from Red Deer, Alta. who’s notched three goals in 24 games for Boston this season.
To make room for Fraser the Oilers placed forward Steve Pinizzotto on waivers.
