The Edmonton Oilers have placed defenceman Andrej Sekera on unconditional waivers for the purpose of a buyout, the team announced Sunday.

Sekera had two years remaining on a six-year, $33-million deal that he signed with the Oilers as a free agent in 2015.

The 33-year-old’s time with Edmonton has been marred by injuries. Sekera put up consecutive 30-plus point seasons across 81 and 80 games in 2015-16 and 2016-17, respectively. But he only managed to suit up for 36 and 24 games the last two campaigns after tearing his ACL and later his Achilles.

Sekera has recorded 236 points across 707 games in his career, with other stops in Buffalo, Carolina and Los Angeles.
