Oilers coach Renney fined for comments

NEW YORK — Tom Renney’s words have got him into trouble with the NHL.

The league has fined the Edmonton Oilers head coach US$10,000 for comments he made following his club’s 2-0 loss to the Los Angeles Kings on Monday night.

After the game, Renney suggested the Oilers didn’t get more calls in their favour because "maybe they (NHL) need Hollywood in the playoffs."

It has been a frustrating season for both Renney and the Oilers.

Edmonton (32-39-9) currently stands 14th in the Western Conference standings and will miss the NHL playoffs for the sixth straight year.

Renney’s future with the Oilers also remains in question as he’s in the final year of his contract.

The fine money will go to the NHL Foundation.
