Oilers send 2016 fourth-overall pick Puljujarvi to AHL

Oilers GM Peter Chiarelli says Kailer Yamamoto has outshone 2016 4th overall pick Jesse Puljujarvi, and is making a very strong case to make the opening night roster.

The Edmonton Oilers have assigned prospect Jesse Puljujarvi to their AHL affiliate in Bakersfield, the club announced Sunday.

Puljujarvi was added with the fourth-overall pick in the 2016 NHL Draft. He suited up for 28 games at the NHL level in 2016-17, posting one goal and seven assists. In 39 games with the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors last season, Puljujarvi amassed 12 goals and 28 points.

Though Puljujarvi remains one of the Oilers’ highly touted prospects, he’s recently been passed on the depth chart by fellow young gun Kailer Yamamoto, who still remains with the big club after the most recent round of cuts.

Veteran defenceman Mark Fayne was also assigned to the AHL, according to the club.
