Oilers place veteran d-man Souray on waivers

The Edmonton Oilers have placed disgruntled defenceman Sheldon Souray on waivers, sources tell Sportsnet.

“I understand the business side of things and I hope things work out for both the Oilers and for myself,” Souray said.

Souray, who had a no-movement clause in his contract expire on July 1, had requested a trade last season. He had given general manager Steve Tambellini a list of preferred teams to be dealt to but the March trade deadline came and went without a Souray deal.

The 33-year-old had an injury-plagued year with the Oilers. He missed 16 games with a concussion after being upended into the corner boards by Jarome Iginla on Oct. 8. His season ended Jan. 30 in Calgary when he fought Iginla, breaking a bone in his hand. Souray had surgery, then was re-admitted to hospital when he got a painful infection in his hand.

In 37 games last season, Souray recorded only four goals and nine assists. He has two years left on his contract at a cap hit of $5.4 million per season.

The Oilers finished dead last in the National Hockey League last season, but have started the rebuild by selecting Taylor Hall first overall in last month’s NHL Entry Draft.
