The Edmonton Oilers are trying to move the remaining cap hit for defenceman Andrew Ference, according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.

Ference has not played since November 2015 due to a career-threatening hip injury. The 37-year-old former Oilers captain is owed $3.25 million this season, the last of a four-year, $13-million contract signed in 2013.
Shedding the remaining dollars on Ference’s deal would create flexibility for the Oilers, who are said to be looking for a backup goaltender and perhaps a right-winger as they chase the San Jose Sharks for top spot in the Pacific Division.
