Melnyk: Ottawa Senators to host outdoor game in 2017-18

Ottawa Senators Owner, Governor and Chair Eugene Melnyk joins Prime Time Sports to talk about the absolutely massive new stadium plans in Ottawa, their planned 2017 outdoor game, and Melnyk's project to shorten the waiting list for organ transplants.

The Ottawa Senators will be hosting their first outdoor game next season.

Senators owner Eugene Melnyk joined Prime Time Sports on Sportsnet 590 The FAN on Thursday to confirm the news.

It is still unclear who Ottawa will play against, but Melnyk is hoping to take on the Montreal Canadiens.

“There’s some things to work out. We’re still, believe it or not, at the stage of trying to figure out who the opponent will be,” Melnyk said. “We are going to be there and we’re hoping Montreal is going to be there but we need to do final negotiations on it.

“As far as the Senators are concerned, we’re in, we’ve negotiated our contract… The big contract, as far as we’re concerned is done, the rest is all dealing with sponsors, and things like suite holders.”

The game will take place at TD Place Stadium, but that wasn’t Melnyk’s first choice of venue.

“You know where I wanted it,” Melnyk said. “I wanted it right in front of Parliament Hill and they couldn’t get their act together.”

The exact date of the event is yet to be revealed.
