Panthers’ Mike Matheson fined $2.5K for high-sticking

Some rough play came near the end of the second period after slashes, late hits against the boards, and even a headlock caused tempers to flare between the Islanders and Panthers.

Florida Panthers defenceman Mike Matheson has been fined $2,500 for high-sticking New York Islanders centre Brock Nelson.

The incident occurred in the first period of the Islanders’ 4-2 win on Tuesday. Matheson was given a double-minor penalty on the play.

The money will go to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund. The Islanders lead the series 2-0 with Game 3 scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.
