Penguins’ Evgeni Malkin out ‘longer-term’ after awkward hit into boards

Watch as Evgeni Malkin is in some discomfort after trying to avoid Kris Letang and then getting hit into the boards awkwardly from Vladislav Gavrikov. Malkin did not return to the ice in the third period.

Pittsburgh Penguins star centre Evgeni Malkin will be out “longer-term,” but his season is not in jeopardy, the team announced Monday.

The 33-year-old left the second period of the Penguins’ 7-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday night after taking an awkward hit into the boards.

Nick Bjugstad also left the game with an injury.

Penguins coach Mike Sullivan said that both of their injuries are longer-term, but Malkin will be sidelined for a more extended period than Bjugstad.
