Penguins GM says team is close to extension with Patric Hornqvist

It was a tic-tac-toe goal for the Pittsburgh Penguins as Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin set up Patric Hornqvist for a power play goal against the Washington Capitals.

Pittsburgh Penguins general manger Jim Rutherford says his team is closing in on a five-year, $26.5-million contract extension with forward Patric Hornqvist.

NHL.com’s Wes Crosby is reporting that Rutherford expects the deal to be announced on Tuesday.

Hornqvist has 17 goals and 32 points in 51 games this season, his fourth with Pittsburgh.

The seven-time 20-goal scorer put home the Stanley Cup-winning goal last spring for the Penguins in Nashville.

He was acquired from the Predators in June 2014 along with forward Nick Spaling for winger James Neal.

The Sollentuna, Sweden, native was the last pick of the 2005 NHL Draft.
