Penguins provide injury updates on Kris Letang, Patric Hornqvist

Penguins coach Mike Sullivan talked about the benefits of having Tom Sestito on the ice after a physical game against the Jets.

The Pittsburgh Penguins shed some light on the status of two injured players on Wednesday night.

Forward Patric Hornqvist has been diagnosed with a concussion. He was a late scratch ahead of their game against the Jets.

No timeline was given for his return.

There has been plenty of confusion around the circumstance of Kris Letang, as the often-injured blue liner hasn’t played since Feb. 21, hasn’t practised since Feb. 24 and did not travel with the team to Winnipeg.

It’s unclear how Letang was injured and information has been vague, with some even beginning to wonder if it could be concussion or stroke-related (Letang has missed significant periods of time due to concussion symptoms, and suffered a stroke in 2014).

That’s not the case, said Penguins coach Mike Sullivan.

“There’s just been so much speculation around Kris’ injury,” Sullivan told reporters after the Penguins’ 7-4 win over the Jets. “What I will confirm is that it’s not a concussion, it’s not related to a stroke or anything of that nature. Kris has an upper-body injury, he’s rehabbing the injury at home as we speak. We’re hopeful here that he’ll have a quick turnaround and we’ll get him back in the lineup.”
