The Pittsburgh Penguins are bringing back defender Juuso Riikola on a one-year, one-way contract, the club announced Thursday.
Riikola’s new deal will pay him $850,000 in 2019-20 — the 25-year-old’s 2018-19 one-year deal carried a cap hit of $925,000.
In 37 games at the NHL level this season, Riikola skated an average of 16:41 per night on the Penguins’ blue line, posting five points in that span. He suited up for five games in AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton as well.
Prior to the 2018-19 campaign, the Joensuu, Finland native spent six seasons with the Finnish team KalPa Kuopio.
