Penguins sign Olli Maatta to six-year extension

Olli Maatta of the Pittsburgh Penguins joined Hockey Central at Noon to discuss his thinking behind signing a long-term deal with Pittsburgh and how that was always the plan for the young defenceman.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed defenceman Olli Maatta to a six-year contract extension, the team announced Friday.

Maatta’s new deal is worth $24,498,000 and carries an average annual value of $4.083 million against the salary cap.

The 21-year-old has helped form a very effective defence pairing with veteran Kris Letang this season. Maatta’s 62.1 per cent on-ice goals for percentage ranks first among Penguins blue-liners (data via war-on-ice.com.)

The Penguins selected Maatta in the first round (22nd overall) in the 2012 NHL Draft. Maatta represented Finland at the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, where he helped the team capture a bronze medal.

Maatta has six goals and 16 points in 53 games in 2015-16.
