Sportsnet.ca — Dion Phaneuf is set to sign a contract extension with the Calgary Flames. The details still need to be finalized, but sources say the deal could be for as many as six years and in the vicinity of US$40 million.
The contract would make the star defenceman the team’s second-highest paid player behind captain Jarome Iginla. It will also include a no-trade clause, but that won’t kick in until the fifth year of the contract when he’ll be 27.
The 22-year-old was picked in the first round (ninth overall) by the Flames in 2003, and has 44 goals and 88 assists in 212 career games.
Phaneuf is scheduled to become a restricted free agent this summer.
