Philip Larsen is following former teammates Anton Belov and Roman Horak to the airport.
The defenceman is the third Edmonton Oiler to leave the team, and the NHL, for opportunity in the Kontinental Hockey League.
Larsen, a 24-year-old native of Esbjerg, Denmark, has reportedly signed a one-year contract with the Russia’s HC Yugra, a team that failed to qualify for the KHL playoffs last season.
Larsen is set to become a restricted free agent on July 1, when his two-year, $2.05-million commitment with the Oilers concludes.
Arriving in Edmonton as part of the trade that sent Shawn Horcoff to Dallas, Larsen registered three goals and nine assists in 30 games for the Oilers last season. Bouncing in and out of the big club’s lineup, Larsen also played seven games for the AHL’s Oklahoma City Barons in 2013-14.
Larsen played professionally in the Swedish Elite League before joining Dallas in 2009-10. He leaves the NHL with 31 points in 125 career games.
