The 2017-18 NHL season officially kicked off on Wednesday night with eight teams in action.

The Pittsburgh Penguins launched their season off with the raising of their fifth Stanley Cup banner at the PPG Paints arena.

Meanwhile, the Toronto Maple Leafs and Winnipeg Jets kicked off the season and it wasn’t long before the pre-season penalty problems creeped into the regular season.

And new-Leaf Patrick Marleau got his first for his new club.

On the west coast the San Jose Sharks came dressed to impress.
