Binnington earned a spot on the AHL's Atlantic Division All-Star team.
Impact
Binnington has struggled in his NHL preseason and regular-season games, but the same cannot be said about AHL Providence, where he's posted a .938 save percentage, 1.59 GAA and 9-1-0 record. The 24-year-old netminder will still be in stiff competition with Ville Husso for a possible backup job with the Blues next season, but if he matches this level of production in the second half of the season he'll give himself a chance to steal the job.
Binnington was reassigned to AHL Providence on Friday.
Impact
After a brief stint with the Blues in order to serve as the backup to Jake Allen, Binnington heads back to the minors. In eight AHL appearances, the netminder has logged a 6-1-0 record with a .933 save percentage. The 24-year-old will likely remain in the minors for the remainder of the season, barring future injuries.
Binnington was recalled from AHL Providence on Wednesday.
Impact
A fifth-year pro, Binnington has been putting together what has been his best campaign to date in 2017-18. After eight appearances, Binnington is 6-1-1 with a 1.84 GAA and .933 save percentage. Not much is known about when the franchise's No.
2 goalie Carter Hutton (lower body) will be back to action, though Binnington appears set to fulfill backup duties until that time.
Blues general manager Doug Armstrong confirmed Wednesday that Binnington was assigned to AHL Chicago, Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Impact
The Blues have ample goaltending depth in the minor-league ranks, so Binnington, who lost out to Carter Hutton for the backup gig at the NHL level behind Jake Allen, may not have a clear path to regular starts in the AHL. The 24-year-old could be a useful trade chip for the Blues to address positional needs elsewhere in the organization.
Binnington let in two goals on 12 shots in Tuesday's loss to the Stars.
Impact
Since goaltender Carter Hutton is on the last year of his contract, the Blues are scouting Binnington to see if he'll be capable of being starter Jake Allen's backup next season. Binnington needs to bring his best this preseason if he wants to vie for that position, but he'll also need to have a solid year in the minors, where he was mediocre last season with a .911 save percentage coupled with a 2.71 GAA. The 24-year-old will have major competition going forward, though. Luke Opilka, who won't be available until December due to hip surgery, struggled in the minors last year, but he's still considered a top prospect. Also, 22-year-old Ville Husso excelled with a .920 save percentage in 20 games for AHL Chicago in the 2016-17 campaign, and his young age could bode well if he's seen as a future starter.
Binnington secured a one-year, two-way contract with the Blues on Saturday, TSN reports.
Impact
Binnington is coming off a solid 2016-17 campaign with AHL Chicago in which he logged a 16-7-3 record along with a .911 save percentage. Although his NHL debut is likely one the 24-year-old would like to forget -- one goal allowed on just four shots -- the former third-round pick could replace Carter Hutton as the No. 2 in St. Louis within the next year or two. The jury is still out on whether Binnington is capable of being an NHL starter, but given his decent numbers in the minors, fantasy owners will want to track his progress.
Binnington was extended a qualifying offer by the Blues, Fox Sports Midwest reports.
Impact
He's only played in one NHL game, entering in relief and letting in one goal on four shots. The 23-year-old Binnington has had several mediocre seasons in the AHL, He's a young, talented goaltender who's still adjusting to the game at a professional level, and he'll be ready to compete with Luke Opilka for a backup position once Carter Hutton's contract expires.
Binnington was probably just a training camp body and was likely destined to return to AHL Chicago from the onset. The netminder made 41 appearances for the Wolves last season while registering a 17-18-5 record that accompanied a 2.85 GAA. The 23-year-old figures to be the starter in the minors this year, which will allow the organization to further evaluate whether or not he is worth keeping around long-term.
Binnington was recalled to the NHL by St. Louis on Sunday.
Impact
With goalie Jake Allen injured on Saturday, the Blues needed to bring up Bennington to have two healthy goaltenders on the roster. Forward Landon Ferraro was sent down to make space on the roster.
Binnington signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Blues on Friday.
Impact
Binnington is behind Jake Allen and Carter Hutton on the Blues' depth chart at goaltender, and will thus spend the majority of the 2016-17 campaign in the minors. The 23-year-old backstop appeared in 41 games with AHL Chicago last season, compiling a 17-18-5 record with an unattractive 2.85 GAA and .907 save percentage over that span. Binnington is still at least one full season away from making the jump to the NHL.
