Prime Minister Justin Trudeau encourages Canadians to support Jets

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is throwing his support behind the Winnipeg Jets — sort of.

“But there’s only one Canadian NHL team left competing for the Stanley Cup so of course he’s gotta do that,” you might say.

True. However, given the fact the only prize his beloved Montreal Canadiens can win this season will be determined by ping-pong balls Saturday, can you blame the guy for jumping on a bandwagon that features stars like Mark Scheifele, Patrik Laine and Connor Hellebuyck?

Trudeau’s support for Winnipeg comes from a video seen in a tweet from Cindy Lamoureux, a member of the Manitoba Liberal Caucus, that features Trudeau and Lamoureux — decked out in a Jets sweater — yelling out a big “go Jets go!”

Despite that oh-so-sincere thumbs up from the Prime Minister in the video, Trudeau did hedge his support somewhat — he’s a politician, after all — quote tweeting the video saying Lamoureux made him do it, but the nation should get behind the Jets moving forward just in general.

Trudeau and the Liberal Party of Canada recently met in Halifax for the 2018 Liberal National Convention.

Winnipeg opens its second-round playoff series with the Nashville Predators Friday night at 8:00 p.m. ET on CBC and Sportsnet 360.
