Rangers re-sign defenceman Brendan Smith to four-year contract

The New York Rangers have re-signed defenceman Brendan Smith to a four-year, $17.4-million contract.

Smith, 28, tallied four points and 29 penalty minutes in 18 games played for the Rangers last season. He came over to New York from the Detroit Red Wings at the NHL trade deadline.

While with the Red Wings last season, Smith put up five points and 34 penalty minutes in 33 games played.
