The New York Rangers have officially signed No. 2 overall pick Kaapo Kakko to an entry-level deal, the team announced Thursday.
The 18-year-old forward is set to begin his NHL career fresh off a remarkable season with TPS of the Finnish Elite League. He led all TPS teammates and set a new record for goals scored by a player under age 18 (22), and added 16 assists for 38 points in 45 Liiga games while earning rookie-of-the-year honours for the 2018-19 season.
He also starred on the international stage, helping Finland claim a trio of gold medals at the 2018 IIHF U18 World Championship, 2019 IIHF World Junior Championship and 2019 IIHF World Championship – and became the youngest player to ever complete that triple-gold feat.
