Justin Abdelkader‘s wallet is a little lighter thanks to some nasty stick work on Tuesday.
The Detroit Red Wings forward was fined $5,000, the maximum allowed under the collective bargaining agreement, for spearing New York Islanders defenceman Scott Mayfield.
The incident occurred in the last minute of the first period of Detroit’s 6-3 win. After getting dumped in front of the Islanders net by Mayfield, Abdelkader showed his displeasure by jabbing him in a sensitive area.
Abdelkader was called for slashing on the play.
