Detroit Red Wings forward Robby Fabbri was fined $2,419.35 — the maximum amount allowable under the collective bargaining agreement — for spearing Toronto Maple Leafs forward Alex Kerfoot, the NHL Department of Player Safety announced Sunday.
Fabbri, a Mississauga, Ont., native, committed the infraction during the second period of Saturday’s 4-1 loss to the Maple Leafs. He and Kerfoot received offsetting minor penalties at the time.
The game grew markedly chippier in the third, when five players were penalized in the final two minutes. First, Anthony Mantha and Jake Muzzin got tangled up, then Andreas Athanasiou took a run at Kerfoot that prompted Justin Holl to get involved.
Since being traded from the St. Louis Blues on Nov. 6, Fabbri has enjoyed a resurgence in Detroit — recording eight goals and 16 points in 20 games.
