The Detroit Red Wings have placed goaltender Jimmy Howard on injured reserve.
Howard suffered a lower-body injury in Friday’s game against the New Jersey Devils.
The 32-year-old had been off to one of the best starts of his career, posting a 1.84 goals-against average and a .940 save percentage.
Detroit has recalled Jared Coreau to fill in for Howard.
Coreau has a 2.39 goals-against average and a .923 save percentage in 13 games with the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins this season.
The Red Wings have also placed defenceman Alexei Marchenko on injured reserve retroactive to Nov. 20.
Marchenko has five assists in 19 games this season.
Detroit is already without Niklas Kronwall when they play the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday.
The bruising defenceman is taking a scheduled maintenance day.
