The Detroit Red Wings will wear a commemorative patch on their sweaters this season in honour of Gordie Howe.
Howe, a longtime member of the Detroit organization, died in June at the age of 88.
The No. 9 patch will go go above the Red Wings logo on the left side of the chest.
“Our team wanted to honour ‘Mr. Hockey,’ due to his incredible impact on the game of hockey, the Red Wings organization and the city of Detroit,” Tom Wilson, the president and CEO of Olympia Entertainment, said in a release on Tuesday. “Wearing the ‘9’ jersey patch will be one of many ways our team will celebrate and look back on the life and career of Gordie during the upcoming season.”
Detroit also has Howe’s No. 9 painted into the ice at Joe Louis Arena to honour the man known as “Mr. Hockey.”
