Rogers and the NHL implemented several alternate camera angles as part of the broadcaster’s first year as the NHL rights holder in Canada as part of Game Plus, a second-screen feature available to Rogers GameCentre Live subscribers.
One of the new angles unveiled to start the 2014-15 season was the Ref Cam. Ref Cam gives fans the sense of being on the ice, offering a glimpse from the middle of the action.
Two NHL officials wore the camera as part of Saturday night’s skills competition portion of the 2015 NHL All-Star weekend in Columbus, Ohio. Here’s a look at several highlights from the skills competition from the vantage point of a referee.
Ryan Getzlaf snipes
Anaheim Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf gets Team Toews’ first goal of the night by firing this bullet past Team Foligno’s Carey Price.
Ryan Johansen gets one for Columbus
Columbus Blue Jackets forward Ryan Johansen gets his first of the night, giving the hometown fans something to smile about.
Nash returns to Columbus with a goal
Rick Nash has received mixed reactions from the fans in Columbus over the All-Star game weekend, but that didn’t stop him from potting this beauty after a nice setup from Jonathan Toews.
Stamkos goes the length of the ice
Tampa Bay Lightning forward Steven Stamkos had three points in his first two All-Star games, and he added to that number with this end-to-end rush and nice finish.
All-Star game scrum
Not since Gordie Howe took over the All-Star game have tensions got so high at the NHL’s mid-season festival. Ah, who are we kidding. It was good to see the boys have some fun with the game though during this smile fest.
Acrobatic stop
Brian Elliott is more than just a master of selfies, he’s also a pretty good NHL goaltender. Watch him make an acrobatic save and barely stop the puck from crossing the line during the third period of the NHL All-Star game.
