NHL referees and linesmen do their best not to interfere with the play but there’s only so much space on the ice and sometimes collisions are unavoidable.
That’s what happened to referee Brad Meier Friday night in the first period of the Washington Capitals vs. Columbus Blue Jackets game.
As you can see in the video at the top of the page, Meier’s right skate got tied up with Blue Jackets forward Brandon Dubinsky in the Capitals zone and Meier did the splits on his way down to the ice and landed awkwardly on his right knee.
The NHL announced Meier was unlikely to return to the game, which resumed with a three-official crew. The extent of Meier’s injury was not known at the time.
Tom Chmielewski was the other referee officiating the game. Mark Shewchyk and Libor Suchanek served as the linesmen.
