Earlier this year the WHL’s Regina Pats were forced to move scheduled outdoor games at Mosaic Stadium indoors because of poor ticket sales and weather.
The NHL was planning to send staff members to the contests, as the league is searching for Canadian venues to hold outdoor games, according to Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman. He noted during Saturday night’s Headlines segment on Hockey Night in Canada that there’s still hope Regina could land an outdoor game.
“I do think Regina is one of the places the NHL is considering for a future outdoor game in Canada,” Friedman said.
Mosaic Stadium is home to the CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders and it open in 2016.
Ottawa and New York have hosted outdoor games this season, while on Saturday night the Toronto Maple Leafs faced the Washington Captials during an outdoor content in Annapolis, Md.
So far next season the league has scheduled two more outdoor games. The next edition of the Winter Classic will happen on Jan. 1, 2019 with the Chicago Blackhawks taking on the Boston Bruins at Notre Dame. That will be followed by a Stadium Series game on Feb. 23, 2019 between the Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins at Lincoln Financial Field, the home of the Philadelphia Eagles.
