The 2017 Winter Classic could be held in St. Louis, according to sources close to the Post-Dispatch.

Plans have not been completed, but the league is considering the city to host the Chicago Blackhawks at Busch Stadium which seats almost 50,000 fans. Another possibility is that the game instead be part of the Stadium Series of outdoor games.

The Blues declined comment to the Post-Dispatch. An announcement from the NHL could come within the next week.

The 2016-17 season marks the 50th anniversary of the Blues who were part of the six-team expansion in 1967-68. Of those six were the Los Angeles Kings who were awarded the 2017 All-Star game and the Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia who are rumoured to be involved in future Stadium Series games.

Toronto, whose Maple Leafs will be celebrating their 100th season, are another possible candidate for the outdoor event.
