Carolina Hurricanes defenceman Dougie Hamilton is out indefinitely after having surgery to repair a fractured fibula in his left leg, the team announced on Friday.
The injury occured after the defenceman was involved in a scary fall against the Columbus Blue Jackets, on Thursday.
The 26-year-old went down with 16 seconds remaining in the second period when, while chasing a loose puck near centre ice, he got tangled up with Blue Jackets forward Kevin Stenlund and fell awkwardly into the boards, pinning his left leg underneath him in the process.
No timeline information has been provided as to how long the recovery will take, but the NHL announced that Hurricanes defenceman Jaccob Slavin will replace Hamilton on the Metropolitan Division team at the 2020 All-Star Game in St. Louis.
Hamilton has 14 goals and 26 assists throughout 46 appearances this season.
