Report: Maple Leafs’ Mitch Marner to play for Canada at worlds

Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner discusses the team's expectations heading into next year, says we have to continue to stick together and stick to the plan, because we've still got a long way to go.

The Toronto Maple Leafs’ season is over, but Mitch Marner isn’t quite ready to hang up his skates for the summer.

The rookie will suit up for Team Canada at the upcoming IIHF World Championship, according to Terry Koshun of The Toronto Sun.

Marner put together an impressive rookie campaign in 2016-17, registering 19 goals and a franchise-record 42 assists for a rookie. He also added one goal and three assists in six playoff games.

The news comes a day after fellow Maple Leafs rookie Auston Matthews announced he will not be at the tournament, nor will Nikita Zaitsev. Goaltender Frederik Andersen told reporters he had received a call from Team Denmark, but declined.

Per Koshun, Morgan Rielly will not play for Team Canada.

The tournament runs May 5-21 in France and Germany.
