The Philadelphia Flyers have named Chuck Fletcher as their new general manager.
Former GM Ron Hextall, who led the club’s front office for the past 4 1/2 seasons, was removed from the position on Nov. 26, with team president Paul Holmgren telling the former netminder that it had “become clear that we no longer share the same philosophical approach concerning the direction of the team,” according to Hextall.
Fletcher comes to the role having recently served as the GM of the Minnesota Wild, a position he held from May 2009 until this past April. Prior to his time at the helm of the Wild, Fletcher served as assistant GM to Ray Shero during the latter’s tenure with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Fletcher was also GM of the Penguins’ AHL club during his time with the organization, guiding the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins to the Calder Cup Finals in 2008.
The 51-year-old also held front-office roles for the Anaheim Ducks from 2002-06 and for the Florida Panthers from 1993-2002. Fletcher most recently held an advisor role alongside Shero in New Jersey.
