Roadrunners’ Craig Cunningham skates with prosthetic for first time

AHLer Craig Cunningham has made an incredible recovery after collapsing on the ice due to heart complications, says he thinks his pro career is over, but adds "anything can happen"

Friday marked a pretty special day for the Tucson Roadrunners as they welcomed a familiar face back to the ice.

Craig Cunningham was able to skate for the first time since March 19, when the captain collapsed on the ice due to acute cardiac arrest prior to an AHL game.

The 26-year-old wore a special prosthetic for skates and hit the ice with help from physical therapists.

The roadrunners organization documented the morning skate with a series of photos as well the following video:

The 26-year-old spent more than a month in nearby Banner–University Medical Center, where he underwent several life-saving procedures as well as the partial amputation of his left leg.

Earlier this week, Cunningham was honoured at a Roadrunners game with a ceremonial puck drop.

He will also be honoured on the NHL stage on April 8. The Arizona Coyotes announced on Tuesday that the club will host Cunningham during a pre-game tribute on April 8 as part of the team’s Fan Appreciation Night.
