Boston Bruins forward Brad Marchand is regarded as one of the peskiest players in the NHL, but he’s undoubtedly also one of the most skilled talents in the league.
Don Cherry thinks a key contributing factor to the success Marchand has on the ice is the fact the winger uses a long hockey stick.
“He does not get the credit he deserves,” Cherry said Saturday night during the Coach’s Corner segment on Hockey Night in Canada.
The 29-year-old scored in overtime against the Detroit Red Wings Wednesday and prior to beating Jimmy Howard with a backhand deke he needed to extend himself to corral a pass from Torey Krug.
“If he has a short stick he doesn’t reach it,” Cherry said of Marchand’s OT winner.
Marchand is coming off a career high 39 goals and 85 points last season and, despite missing eight games this season, the Halifax native is currently second on his team in goals and points.
“He’s got a nose for the net as they say,” Cherry added.
