We’re close to the halfway point of the NHL season and Don Cherry is already thinking about some end-of-year hardware.
Saturday night during his Coach’s Corner segment on Hockey Night in Canada, Cherry made an early case for a pair of defencemen playing for Canadian teams.
Cherry would like to see Calgary Flames captain Mark Giordano and Montreal Canadiens veteran Shea Weber among the early Norris Trophy candidates.
Particularly in the case of Giordano, Cherry expressed confusion over why he appears to consistently get over-looked.
“I don’t understand why [Giordano] is not mentioned for the Norris Trophy,” Cherry said. “He does everything: He scores goals, he hits, he fights, he blocks shots. He does everything and he’s never ever mentioned. I don’t understand it. He’s a tough guy and [the Flames] are lucky to have him.”
To his point, Giordano scored earlier Saturday afternoon, a short-handed one, and got into a fight as he’s been enjoying a five-goal, 33-point 2018-19 campaign.
In regards to Weber, Cherry’s focus was more on the fact he’s appeared to get back to being his usual Norris-candidate self after coming back from injury.
“Boy, what a comeback [Weber] has made,” Cherry said. “This guy is tough and he looks like he’s 100 per cent now. He blocks shots, does everything.”
Weber entered Saturday night’s action having tallied three goals and six points in eight games played with Montreal this season.
