The New York Rangers have placed Ryan Malone on waivers, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reports.

Malone, who signed a one-year deal with the Rangers worth a reported $700, 000, has no points through five games this season. If he clears, the 34-year-old will be sent to the AHL, though various media have suggested he might not report.

Freidman also tweeted that the move suggests injured Rangers center Derek Stepan is nearing a return from a broken leg.

Stepan and Dan Boyle, who’s been on the shelf with a broken right hand since the season opener, both practiced with the team on Sunday. Both players wore non-contact jerseys.
