Islanders claimed rarely used Schremp

UNIONDALE, N.Y. — Rob Schremp has found a new home on Long Island.

The New York Islanders claimed the former first-round pick off waivers from the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday.

Schremp was a prolific scorer in junior that has yet to develop into a full-time NHLer _ appearing in just seven games for the Oilers over the past three seasons.

The 23-year-old from Syracuse, N.Y., will likely get more of an opportunity with the Islanders.

Schremp spent last season with Edmonton’s AHL affiliate in Springfield, scoring seven goals and 42 points in 69 games. That’s well off the 23 goals and 76 points he had in the AHL the season before.

Edmonton drafted Schremp 25th overall in 2003. He had three assists in seven career games with the team.
