There are two kinds of hockey fans: those who paint their faces, and those who think “well, you can’t walk around like that.”
Patrick Warburton, aka David Puddy from Seinfeld, is famously in the face painting category.
“You gotta let them know you’re out there. It’s the playoffs,” Warburton’s character explained in the memorable episode from the sitcom titled “The Face Painter.”
The New Jersey Devils, Puddy’s favourite team, hosted the Tampa Bay Lightning Wednesday night in Game 4 of their first-round series. Already trailing the series 2-1 coming into the game, the Devils pulled out all the stops at home. Puddy, with his colourful face and a ‘D’ painted on his chest to recreate the look from that Seinfeld episode, was in attendance and, yes, was supporting the team.
“This is always a lot of fun to be here. I’ve been a Devils fan since they adopted me,” Warburton told NHL.com. “The Devils are my team and it is always great to be back here.”
The Devils dropped the game 3-1 and are now on the brink of elimination as the series heads back to Tampa Bay. New Jersey has always been the long shot in this series, but there could be as many as three games left — it’s far from over, a New Jersey fan might say.
Or, as Puddy once shouted: “Don’t mess with the Devil buddy, we’re No. 1, we beat anybody. We’re the Deviiiiiils. The Deviiiiils!”
