The Ottawa Senators have traded centre Jean-Gabriel Pageau to the New York Islanders for a trio of draft picks — a conditional 2020 first, a 2020 second and a conditional 2022 third — Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman first reported Monday.
The first-round pick involved is top-three protected and becomes a 2021 first-rounder if it falls within that range. There are no conditions on the second-rounder and the only way the Islanders will part with the third is if they end up winning the Stanley Cup this season.
Pageau, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent in the summer, is in the midst of a career year with a career-high 24 goals through 60 games so far this season to go along with a 53.2 faceoff winning percentage.
The 27-year-old has spent his entire pro career with the Senators organization after being selected in the fourth round (96th overall) in 2011.
The Islanders currently hold the top wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference as they make a push for the playoffs for the second consecutive year.
Pageau figures to fall into a middle-six role, however it’s unclear who exactly his linemates might be.
In 428 career NHL games, Pageau has 87 goals and 95 assists for 182 points.
The rebuilding Sens, who also sent Vladislav Namestnikov to the Avalanche earlier in the day, now have three potential first-round selections in 2020 and four 2020 second-round picks. Ottawa also has three 2021 second-round picks with which to work.
