The Ottawa Senators have confirmed the accuracy of images on the internet purporting to reveal the design of their new-look heritage jersey.
On Sept. 17, a story on the internet suggested the Buffalo Sabres’ team store at the First Niagara Center (formerly HSBC Arena) was prematurely selling the item, as well as the Toronto Maple Leafs heritage jersey.
The Senators jersey was not scheduled to be unveiled until Oct. 1.
On Sunday, the Ottawa Senators issued a release explaining that the jersey was mistakenly sent by Reebok to the retailer prior to its official release to other retail stores.
“While we are very disappointed to have our new jersey revealed in this manner, we are pleased to see the early comments from fans are extremely positive,” said Jeff Kyle, Senators vice-president of marketing. “We believe that this jersey will be a top seller in the National Hockey League this season, especially as fans learn the story behind how it was designed.
The Maple Leafs have yet to comment on the story.
